    Recommendations

Parents, Adult Students, and Colleagues share their experiences working with Matthew.

"Matthew has more patience with my kids than I do! My eight-year-old son and seven-year-old daughter were very blessed, not just by his excellent teaching, but by his caring personality."
    Claudia F
    Parent of Two Piano Students
"Matthew's been superb with my twins. My sons, now 18 and off to college, took piano lessons, music theory, and composition from Matthew for about six years. Can't say enough good things about the experience. Matthew is patient, thorough, flexible about days and times when needed, and, from top to bottom, an all-around great guy. Also, the lessons were at our house, and the rest of us weren't always quiet when Matthew was teaching, but he handled our disruptions with kindness and understanding! One last cool thing about him is his contagious passion for music, not just as a teacher but as a singer, and composer as well. Highly recommended."
    Adam W
Parent of Two Piano, Theory, and Composition Students
"Matthew has been teaching my two children since they were four and five years old. It has been 6 years of lessons now, and they are still learning and growing, musically and personally, from his great experience, personal touch, and professionalism as a teacher of young people. Also, he has worked very well with our sometimes chaotic family schedule. Very recommended!"
    Ray E
    Parent of Two Piano Students
"Matthew is a real professional. In teaching music and piano to my son and daughter, he has been very kind and patient, yet challenging and thorough. They have been taking lessons with him since 2020, when they were just four and five years old. Matthew also greatly values honesty and accuracy in business matters, which I appreciate."
    Ligia M
Parent of Two Piano and Voice Students
"I took lessons with Matthew for eight years before I moved out of state, but I progressed so quickly in that time! Matthew is just a great teacher, a true professional. He focuses on getting the basics down, which is absolutely necessary, but he has me playing fun music as well. I am very happy with my progress. I am an adult and my family is also very impressed with how well I can play and how I progressed every few months to new levels of ability. Matthew is also very pleasant and dependable making lessons a pleasure. I also have taken some singing lessons from him. I like that he taught both disciplines."
    Priscilla C
    Adult Piano and Voice Student
"Before I studied with Matthew, I had teachers who did not understand the need to build a strong foundation first. Right off the bat, Matthew helped me develop basic technique and sight reading skills, learning simpler music first, and especially for me, sharpening my sense of rhythm and rhythmic vocabulary. We studied twice a week for five and a half years, and it was a wonderful experience. Many thanks, Mr. Aldrich!"
    Zach G
    Adult Piano Student
"Learned a lot, and had fun! Matthew is very knowledgeable in music theory, piano and voice. He is very patient, explains complex musical practices well, and gives appropriate material and feedback to help the student grow. He is reliable, flexible with a student's schedule, and available on short notice. I look forward to many more lessons with him. Thank you, Matthew!"
    Brett W
    Adult Theory and Piano Student
"Blessed with a beautiful instrument, and a joy for teaching correct singing to others, beginning to advanced "
    Jacalyn Kreitzer
Mezzo-Soprano; Seattle Opera, Metropolitan Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Etc
"Matthew is awesome! He has shown mastery of all aspects of Music Theory and Composition: Notation; Musical Form; Chord Voicing and Voice Leading; Rhythmic, Melodic, and Harmonic Vocabulary and Analysis; Counterpoint; Instrumentation and Orchestration. Not to mention, an interesting guy with a great sense of humor."
    Stephen Grimm
Musical Director, Pasadena Pro Musica; Bass-Baritone, Los Angeles Master Chorale
"What a sound! Incredible pitch focus, yet his sound is so large -- like four singers at once."
    Phil Smith
Walt Disney Concert Hall Organ Conservator; Church of our Savior San Gabriel, Organist and Choral Director
"A masterful tuned-percussion part: beautiful counterpoint to the vocal melody"
    Dr. Thomas Davies
Director of Choral Activities, Cal Poly State University San Luis Obispo, regarding my arrangement of The Beach Boys' "Your Welcome" from my song-cycle Songs All Sizes (for Barbershop Quartet, Soprano Choir, Children's Choir, Orchestra, and Electronics)
